Memo #238
Featuring Masahiro Kawai
Dr. Masahiro Kawai, Dean of the Asian Development Bank Institute, discusses the importance of peace, security, and stability in achieving an ‘Asian Century’.
Rising inequalities and environmental degradation require significant policy efforts to address them; otherwise, they have the potential to derail sustained economic growth by creating social divides.
Policy makers must pursue forward-thinking agendas and contain vested interest groups in order to make progress on reforms to achieve inclusive green growth.
Overarching peace and security are fundamental preconditions for sustained growth in the region. Should maritime disputes, for example between Japan and the People’s Republic of China, fall into open armed confrontation, economic prosperity in the region could be jeopardized.
States must endeavour to realize equitable and environmentally sustainable societies while ensuring regional stability, or the prospects for an ‘Asian Century’ could suffer.
